Homemade Astronaut Child Costume Idea
I have always loved to sew. In years past I have always sat down at my sewing machine and sewed almost all my Halloween costumes. I've been Minnie Mouse, Bride of Frankenstein, 50's girl with the Poodle Skirt. When my 8 year-old was little I sewed some of his costumes also. He went one year as a clown.
So when my son came to me and asked if I would sew him an Astronaut costume for a report he was going to present to the second grade - I jumped at the request. Our second grade was to choose from a list a famous people or someone who made an impact on history, so my little boy wanted to write about the NASA Astronaut he had met in person a few weeks before.
Our School had hosted a star party and a special guest was a NASA Astronaut Captain Lee Morin who had space walked in 1999.
I went out and bought my supplies. I bought a pattern that was supposed to be a monkey and converted it into a space suit. I used orange broad cloth for the body and silver lame for the belt. We had bought patches at NASA Houston and used them on the costume. A neighbor had a hard hat so we borrowed it and painted it white. With my Cricut machine I cut out letters from vinyl and spelled out NASA.

Homemade Astronaut Halloween Costume Idea
My sister and I made this Homemade Astronaut Halloween Costume Idea for my son. All he wanted to be was an astronaut for Halloween. We stated with a basic white two piece pattern for the suit with actual NASA patch all over. The helmet is made of two salad bowls glued together with silver fabric lining the face cut out and the neck to cover the sharp edges.
The air tanks are 2 oatmeal containers with A LOT of white duct tape around them. Also more patches on the back. Two air hoses are glued to the helmet and inserted in the top of the "tanks". His boots are old snow boots wrapped in more white duct tape. White gloves finished the costume.
The applying of duct tape to the tank was the most time consuming part of the costume. If you can't sew a white sweat suit would work just as well. This costume was a hit at school and around town.
Coolest Homemade Astronaut and Solar System Couple Costume 4
My boyfriend and I decided to be a Homemade Astronaut and Solar System Couple Costume for Halloween this year. We tucked an old lab coat into Aikido (martial arts) pants found in our closets and pinned an American flag on his arm for his astronaut costume. With a 2 liter soda bottle and the hose attachment of a vacuum cleaner we made an airtank that was secured with his Aikido belt.
My costume was a simple black shirt and skirt with a belt. I used markers to decorate Styrofoam and ping pong balls as planets. I attached the planets using floral wire (or any thin wire will do) and wrapping it around my belt. I finished the costume by attaching confetti stars all over with double sided tape.
Because most of our costume components were found around the house I only paid $3 for the Styrofoam balls!
